Artful Dementia Research Week
Artful Dementia: insights in creative and participatory ethical research with people with severe dementia
Network seminar: Tuesday March 25 9.00-12.30 uur
with amongst others Ann Therese Lotherington, Lilli Mittner, Lieke de Kock and Barbara Groot-Sluijsmans (NL)
Location: start at Droog (Groenburgwal 44 - om de hoek van Droog gallerie) and finish at Outsider Gallery (Neerlandiaplein 7, 1018 DR Amsterdam)
The perspective of people with dementia is underrepresented in scientific research. Researchers experience barriers, such as communication problems and informed consent procedures. There is a ‘misfit’ between traditional methodology and the research target group. Creative participatory research (PABR) is a research design appropriate for understanding the experiences of people with dementia by using creative methods (e.g. drawing, dance, theatre). PABR is less verbal and rational and promotes inclusion and space for self-expression.
Tromso (Norway) and the Artful Dementia Lab is home to a hotspot of best-practice PABR projects with people with dementia, in which they continuously search for, and contribute to, innovative understandings of:
- meaningful lives, welfare and well-being
- mutual relations between people living in difference together
- prevention of loneliness through everyday life experiences
- complementing medical and pharmacological understandings of ageing and dementia.
Join us for an engaging seminar where we will delve into the significant value and inherent challenges of PABR (Participatory Arts-Based Research) projects focused on individuals with advanced dementia. This English-language program will unite stakeholders from the Netherlands who are passionate about the theme of "Arts-Based Research, Dementia, and the Arts," alongside international guests. Together, we will foster meaningful conversations, share innovative insights, and embark on creative experiments. Your participation will contribute to a transformative dialogue that can shape the future of arts and dementia care.

“Art is a Choice” shows the work of a group of very different makers. Finished drawings and sculptures, work by clients and artists together, as well as insights into the process of making, of working with art and culture together. This results in work that expresses pleasure and freedom, but also has a personal or deeper meaning. What do you want to leave behind when you are gone? How do you express a feeling of unease? What do you do when you want to turn your limitation into your strength? Four guest curators involved in the ambulatory art team helped develop the exhibition.
